Facebook Gifts Adds Charity Donations

Users can now donate to 11 different charities through Facebook's gift-giving website.

Facebook announced yesterday that its Facebook Gifts platform can now accept donations for 11 different charities.

Though still in its testing stage, the feature will let users with access to Facebook's e-commerce site make a donation to nonprofit organizations on the behalf of gift recipients. So, instead of sending someone a physical gift, users can make a donation in the gift recipient's name, Facebook said in a news post. Once the recipient accepts the charitable gift, Facebook will post the news on the giver and recipients' Timelines, TechCrunch reported.

"We are especially pleased to be launching this test now – when so many people are looking for new ways to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy, or assist those most in need around the holidays," Facebook said in the news post.

The 11 charities that users can gift donations to include: American Red Cross, Blue Star Families, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, DonorsChoose.org, Girls Inc., Kiva, LIVESTRONG, Oxfam America, RAINN, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, and Water.org. If a giver can't decide which company to donate to, they can let the recipient decide, according to TechCrunch.

What's more, Facebook will not take a cut of the donations at least through the test phase. During that time, every cent of a user's donation will go straight to the charity, Wired reported. For now, users can't gift donations any higher than $25, according to the magazine.

"In addition to aiding in the aftermath of the hurricane, we believe that making it easier for people using Facebook to give a charitable donation through Facebook Gifts will introduce many Facebook users to exciting and worthy nonprofit organizations they may not have discovered otherwise," Jared Morgenstern, a Facebook product designer, told TechCrunch.
