LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) – Lakewood police are struggling to come to grips with the death of a veteran of their force.
James Davies, 35, was killed early Friday morning when a fellow officer fired a round at a crime scene and accidentally killed him. The two officers were only feet away from each other at the time but were separated by a fence.
“I don’t know of any ingredient that I could put into this story that would make it any more tragic,” Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said Friday afternoon.
It was the first time in the Lakewood Police Department’s 43 year history that an officer was killed in the line of duty.
The shooting happened at about 2 a.m. at a home at 20th and Fenton, in a central area of the city near the border with Edgewater.
The officer was outside the house when he was killed.
