Denver Mayor: 'People Have Spoken' On Amendment 64
Nov 7th 2012, 18:57

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver Mayor Michael Hancock believes there is a lot of work to do after voters approved a measure legalizing recreational use of pot.

Amendment 64 allows adults to use marijuana. It won by a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent on Tuesday.

“I think the governor said it very clearly, he and I did not support Amendment 64. We were concerned about the message it sends to our children, the impact on tourism and on business in Colorado,” said Hancock during an interview on CBS4 Morning News Wednesday morning.

He said marijuana remains illegal on the federal level which complicates the issue.

“We still have a federal government that does not recognize marijuana as a legal substance. So as he is working with the attorneys on the state level, I instructed the city attorney to begin to work on how you implement this, how do we work with the federal government?” said Hancock.

“The people have spoken and now it’s our responsibility to figure out how this works in Colorado. At the state level as well as on the local level. We’ll see what happens.”
