Helen Hrywnak and hundreds of other apartment dwellers in Hillsborough County have found an easy way to recycle their aluminum cans and donate to charity, thanks to an initiative started by a Tampa man who noticed a void.
Like many other locals living in apartments, Hrywnak and her neighbors at Grand Oaks Apartments in Riverview had no convenient way to recycle. Many complexes simply don’t offer onsite recycling.
Now, Grand Oaks residents can haul their aluminum cans to the giant recycled-plastic soda cans dotting their apartment complex.
Crews from The Green Can project collect and recycle the cans, and the money gets donated to a Tampa-based charity.
The project’s slogan is “Recycling for the benefit of mankind.”
During the past year, Dennis Gallagher and his crew have placed about 200 of the giant green soda cans in apartment complexes and at a few business locations across Hillsborough County. So far, they’ve collected more than 100,000 aluminum cans.
