(AP) – Fort Collins is requiring new developments to have more bicycle parking under a new land use code. Under the old code, developers had to dedicate 5 percent of a building’s parking to bicycles. The Coloradoan reports the new code sets requirements for bicycle parking based on the square footage of a structure, rather than the number of car parking spots. So a new multifamily residential facility would need to have one bike parking space per bedroom. Fraternity and sorority houses and extra-occupancy rental houses would have to provide not just one bike parking spot per bedroom but one per bed. The city’s interim bike coordinator Molly North says the goal is to raise the city’s rating for bike friendliness as rated by the League of American Bicyclists.
